# Rectifier

We know that electricity current has two types-

- AC (alternative current)
- DC (direct current)

The Rectifier is a device which convert AC into direct current (DC).

# Half wave Rectifier

Half Rectifier is a device which Rectifier only half cyclic of AC voltage. i.e. it convert only half cycle of AC signal into DC. A half Rectifier is shown in fig (1). In this a AC source is connected to primary coil of transformer P1 and P2 as shown in fig. A P-N function diode, a load resistance Rn is connected in series of secondary coil S1 and S2 of transformer.

# Working of half wave Rectifier

Let us assume that For first half Cycle of AC signal the P-N terminal of primary coil at negative voltage and P2 terminal of primary coil at negative voltage and P2 terminal at positive voltage. Due to mutual induction the S1 terminal of secondary coil become positive and S2 terminal become negative. In this condition diode become in forward bais and we know the diode pass a current only in forward bais. So a current will flow through a load resistance Rl.

Due to this current we obtain voltage across the Rl resistance, for next half cycle the terminal S1 and S2 become negative and positive respectively. In this condition diode become in reverse bais. So current will not flow from Rl and we obtain “zero” voltage across resistance Rl. Similarly for next cycle we obtain voltage across the resistance Rl. In this figure(2) is showing input AC voltage at secondary coil S1 and fig (3) is showing output voltage Rl. From this figure we found for half wave rectifier. Rectifier only positive half cycle of input signal. So this device is known as half wave Rectifier and its efficiency is about 40.6%.

## Full wave Rectifier

Full wave rectifier converts both halves of a.c input signal to d.c output. The circuit diagram of full wave Rectifier is shown in fig. The a.c input signal is fed to the primary (P) coil (S), the load resistance Rl across which output voltage is obtained is connected between common point of n region of diode and central tapping of secondary coil.

## Working of full wave Rectifier

When positive half Cycle of input A.C signal flows through the primary coil, induced emf is set up in the secondary coil due to mutual induction. The direction of induced emf is such that D1 is in forward biased and diode D2 is reverse biased, so that current due to diode D1 flows through the circuit in a direction shown by arrows (above RL). The output voltage which varies in accordance with the input half cycle is obtained across the load resistance (RL).

During negative half cycle of input ac signal diode D1 is reverse biased and diode D2 is forward biased. The current due to diode D2 flows through the circuit in a direction shown by arrows (below RL) the output voltage is obtained across the load resistance RL.

Since both the halves of input ac(wave) are rectified, so the function diode is called a full wave Rectifier.
