# What is Light?

It is a electromagnetic wave energy that can sense by eyes. Its wavelength is around 400nm to 750nm.

λ1 = 400nm , f1 = C/λ1

λ2 = 750nm , f2 = C/λ2

Or 400×10^9 A° = 4000 A° or 7500 A° the light is travel in vacuum with velocity 3×10^8 m/s.

# Definition of Ray

The light is travel in a straight path it means it is travel from one point to another point in straight line. The path of light is known as Ray. An arrow sign on ray represent its direction.

When a light ray incident on a surface then three types of process will happen.

1. Reflection
2. Absorption
3. Transmission

## Reflection of light

When a ray of light incident on a boundary (inter face) separating two medium and come back in the same medium then this phenomenon is known as reflection. Generally reflection has two types-

## 1) Regular reflection

When a light ray incident on a plane mirror surface then all reflected ray will go in a particular direction (that direction decided by reflection law). When these reflecting rays incident on our eyes then they will create a flash, this type of reflection is known as regular reflection.

## 2) Diffused reflection

When a light incident on a rough surface then they will reflected in all possible direction this type of reflection is known as diffused reflection.

### Law of reflection

1. The angle between incident ray and normal (i) is equal to angle between reflected ray and normal (r). ∠i= ∠r
2. The incident ray, reflected ray and normal ray are found in same plane.
3. The wavelength, frequency, velocity of reflected ray will remain same as of incident ray. (Velocity→ due to present in same medium) but intensity of light will ↓se. (Due to absorption)

### Plane mirror

A plane mirror is a mirror with a flate reflecting surface. The image formed by plane mirror is virtual and laterally inverted and equal in size. The image will form behind the mirror of the same distance of object from the mirror.

And the plane mirror is formed by a simple glass by polishing its one surface with silver nitrate.

### Spherical mirror

If the surface of mirror is Curved then they will known by the name spherical mirror and they have of two types

1. Concave mirror
2. Convex mirror
